The Jahan

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

We spent our first full day in Cambodia exploring the metropolis of Phnom Penh, starting with a 20-minute cyclo ride around the city. Our first stop in the capital city was the large Royal Palace with beautiful gardens and ornate examples of Khmer architecture, including Throne Hall and Silver Pagoda. Afterward, we visited the National Museum which houses many of the large statues from the Angkor period and other treasures. We had lunch ashore at Topaz Restaurant, one of the city’s premier fine-dining restaurants. Then we visited the sobering S-21 Genocide Museum, a former high school that served as an interrogation center by the Khmer Rouge. After the museum, one part of the group visited the killing field of Choueng Ek, while another visited the Central Market and Wat Phnom, the only hill in the city. The temple rests on a 27-meter-high tree-lined hill and has balustrades lined with naga, mythical serpent creatures. We had a lovely barbecue dinner on deck followed by a traditional Apsara Dance performance from Cambodian Living Arts, known for intricate finger movements. During dinner, The Jahan cruised around the Phnom Penh waterfront.

National Geographic Islander II

Santa Cruz Island

The day started with a talk on photography using one’s smart phone, quite fitting for the day we had ahead of us. We boarded buses in town and headed for the highlands, visiting first El Trapiche, a traditional farm where we learned to make brown raw sugar, moonshine, coffee, and chocolate. We had the chance of tasting everything, and everything was good. Afterwards, we headed to Los Gemelos, a pair of spectacular sinkholes surrounded by the last remains of the original Galapagos highlands forest. The plant coverage here is very different from the desertic vegetation we associate with Galapagos. Later after lunch, we visited Manzanillo, a private tortoise reserve. On our way, we had to literally slalom through a large number of tortoises that were on the road!

National Geographic Endeavour II

Fernandina and Isabela Island

This morning, we started our day of exploration with the company of bottle nose dolphins and many other marine animals. It was a good sign that our day was going to be amazing. We explored Fernandina Island, which is home to thousands of marine iguanas, which we found lounging against the black rocks. This destination gives one the impression of setting foot on the island as it was during its formation and colonization of species. The island is formed by a giant active volcano, which means the island will continue to evolve over time. It took millions of years for this archipelago to be formed and colonized by species from other regions of our planet. It’s amazing to get to explore this special place.

National Geographic Venture

Almejas Bay and Sand Dollar Beach

A pink-orange sunrise illuminated National Geographic Venture this morning while sailing to the southernmost section of Magdalena Bay, called Almejas. Once there, our guests and staff boarded pangas, local boats, for a long whale watching session. There were probably 30 gray whales (females and males) surrounding the boats performing all kinds of behaviors related to mating. Practically all spyhopped, some breeched, many showed flukes, and almost all rolled over to show their bellies and their pectoral fins. Sometimes, five whales at a time were spyhopping, and the cameras and cell phones were snapping like crazy. We also observed hundreds of double-crested cormorants, brown pelicans, magnificent frigatebirds, and western gulls going back and forth to get food in this productive environment. In the afternoon, the vessel moved north to Santa Maria Bay where our guests and naturalists explored the sand dunes and mangrove environments and found their amazing inhabitants –shore and land birds, sand dollars, shells of many different species, fiddler crabs, a coyote, jackrabbit tracks, and unique sand dune plants. Back on board, we finished our first day of exploration enjoying the music of local performers, Los Coyotes de Magdalena, and a deligthful dinner.

National Geographic Orion

Takaroa, Tuamotu Islands

Our day at Takaroa began with a warm welcome from a small local community nestled within an aqua-blue, fast-flowing pass of a large lagoon. The guests were greeted by the quiet beauty of the island before embarking on a short journey aboard a local school bus. First stop, the incredible County of Roxburgh’s shipwreck. Standing inside this massive wreck, which measures 186 feet, was truly awe-inspiring, offering a rare glimpse into the island's maritime history. Next, we visited a working pearl farm where guests learned about the delicate process of cultivating pearls. From the meticulous care of oysters to finally the stunning pearls, it was a fascinating experience. Afterward, everyone returned onboard, their hands wrapped around a refreshing, ice cold coconut— the perfect end to a memorable day in Takaroa.
