John Scheerens

John Scheerens came to Alaska in 1980 to work a summer job in Glacier Bay National Park. He never quite got around to leaving. John grew up in Tucson, Arizona and attended the University of Arizona. Following a stint in the U.S. Army he lived in Montana for seven years dividing time between being a ski bum and attending graduate school at the University of Montana.

Following that first summer in Alaska, he knew he had found the right place and over the intervening thirty some years has worked in several facets of the Alaska tourism industry as the general manager of a couple of exclusive resort lodges, general manager of a wilderness expedition company, wilderness guide, naturalist, and finally for the last several years as owner of Alaska-In-Depth, a small tour and consulting company that creates custom tours, provides training programs for several Alaska tour companies, and contracts with various clients to create and operate several Alaska based tour programs. John has traveled extensively throughout Alaska in everything from swanky cruise ships to small tour boat to kayak to river raft to on-foot and truly loves to share his passion for all things Alaska with visitors. He has been featured as an Alaskan expert guide on Good Morning America, ESPN Outdoors, and the Outdoor Channel. He has a secondary passion and small business as a stained glass artist. He lives mostly in the bush community of Gustavus, Alaska in a self-built cabin.
