Roddy Bray

Originally from the UK, Roderick spent a 'gap year' in a Cape Town township in the late 1980s. A state of emergency was in force, and Roderick was caught up in the revolutionary spirit in South Africa, and at the same time bewitched by the beauty and diversity of Cape Town.

One ‘gap’ year turned into 20 and he saw the fall of apartheid and the rise of Nelson Mandela to the Presidency. He watched a pariah state embrace reconciliation, hammer out a liberal constitution, and face its demons in the Truth Commission.

Roderick trained as an Anthropologist in the UK and the University of Cape Town. In South Africa he ran educational tours and led an international volunteer education program. He enjoys sharing the insights he has gained from living and travelling in Africa, from politics to evolution, and conservation to aid and development.

As a guide, writer, lecturer, and expedition leader he has worked in 22 countries and developed various cultural tourism initiatives. He is the author of a book about travelling in Africa with children and a website about Africa’s leading guides. He believes passionately in the inspirational power of travel. Roddy now lives in Oxford, UK, where he enjoys the social and academic life of the University, making wine, and kayaking the local rivers.
