Tama Nunnelly

Tama Nunnelley teaches geography and history at Guntersville Middle School in Guntersville, Alabama. She focuses on bringing history to life through the infusion of geography and technology into her classroom. Tama is a National Geographic Certified Educator and was honored by the National Council for Geographic Education as a 2015 Distinguished Teacher of the Year.

Her professional organizations include the Alabama Geographic Alliance, Social Studies Council of Alabama, the National Council for Social Studies, and the National Council for Geographic Education. She has presented at many state and national conference for these organizations. She is president of her state social studies council and a proposal reviewer and member of the geography community for NCSS.

Tama co-hosts a geographic leadership institute in Alabama for teachers from over 15 states to provide them with tools to advocate for geographic literacy. She is a two-time alum of ESRI’s T3G program for teachers to use GIS in their classrooms. One of her GIS-based maps has been published in a book of resources for educators.

Since becoming a National Geographic Certified Educator, she has served as a trainer for the program and a mentor for other educators preparing for certification. She served on National Geographic’s K-12 advisory council and as a reviewer for their American History textbook. Tama was a guest speaker during National Geographic’s Explorers Festival where she shared the Society’s impact on education. Tama also serves as an adjunct instructor in the geography department at the University of North Alabama.
