Theresa Svancara

Theresa is a broad-based naturalist with an engaging and contagious enthusiasm for her subject matter. Although her emphasis is marine mammals, Theresa is also well-versed in glaciology, and the flora and fauna of Alaska. Theresa’s 20 years of living in Alaska have given her keen insight into the mix of the natural world and human activity in Alaska. During those years she has worked in the “bush” in public health, for the State Department of Environmental Conservation (including the Exxon Valdez oil spill), and as a private environmental consultant in marine oil spill prevention. Holding a 50-ton US Coast Guard license, Theresa has also captained a glacier-tour boat in Southeast Alaska. For the past several years Theresa has been lecturing and driving Zodiacs on expedition ships in the Arctic (Alaska, Russian Far East, Canada, and Greenland) and the Antarctic. She holds a degree in environmental health from Colorado State University.
