Today we explored the area around Cape Brown, a sheltered bay in the northern part of George VI Sound, between the Antarctic Peninsula and the northeastern coast of Alexander Island. At the most southerly point of the sound lies the George VI Ice Shelf, which produces several tabular icebergs every year. We got to admire the shelf from the comfort of our ship. Throughout the morning, the ship pushed through big floes of sea ice for around 30 miles before we managed to reach Cape Brown. Eventually, we sighted land and were able to launch our boats for an afternoon Zodiac cruise. We observed several crabeater seals and Weddell seals and spotted a great number of krill in the water.
