Ambrym welcomed us with open arms and a beautiful all-female string band singing, “Oh Happy Days.” Some of us made the trek past a coconut plantation or two and a few small villages, while others rode in the back of pick-up trucks to get to the magical and sacred grounds of the Rom dance.
We were first told the origin story of Ambrym and then witnessed the amazing UNESCO heritage sand paintings. Finally, we watched, entranced as the dancers moved, stomped, and pounded their way up and down along the soil, channeling their ancestors and speaking to the spirits. It was a truly special experience for us all to witness.
After a wonderful lunch, we cooled ourselves off in the stunning waters, some of us snorkeling, others diving, and even a few others taking a ride in the wonderful glass-bottom Zodiac.
A fantastic day was had by all!
