Today, Ambrym Island, the “black magic island” of Vanuatu, delivered an unforgettable mix of adventure, surprises, and cultural immersion. Known for its volcanoes and mystical traditions, the island greeted us with rain, turning our plans into an unexpected adventure.

The birding group’s rainforest trek quickly shifted as heavy rain led us to join the hikers heading to the Rom dance. Spirits were high despite the downpour, but an overflowing river blocked our path, forcing us to turn back. Laughing and drenched, we returned to the ship for lunch, embracing the unpredictability of the island life.

The highlight came when the villagers brought the Rom dance to us. Dancers adorned in intricate mask and dried banana-leaf costumes, performed with drumbeats and chants, sharing their sacred traditions with pride.

We wrapped up the day with recaps and briefing of tomorrow’s adventure, followed by a yummy BBQ dinner under the stars. Ambrym reminded us that sometimes the best moments come from the unexpected.
