We were south of the Antarctic circle by the time we left our beds,
The views of the scenic Crystal Sound sent snow flurries around our heads.
The weather was a bit wild, so we decided it best to stay warm,
With Magnus sharing Shackleton’s expedition of the forlorn.
Their bittersweet story reminds us to appreciate our ship,
She motors on tirelessly, moving closer to the Antarctic tip.
By afternoon we found a place as unique as it was nice,
The captain brought us into a floating plateau of sturdy sea ice.
So the staff and I grabbed our gear to check the ice was sound,
It held us well, so we let out the call, our next adventure was found.
The guests suited up and made for the gate, not much slower than a race,
And as each disembarked into the white land, a smile was on each face.
Each went their way, and it wasn’t long before several snowmen were erected,
Excitement grew until the snowballs flew, and no staff member was protected.
We all were caught in the frozen onslaught, while onlookers had a good laugh,
My cohorts and I, let the snowballs fly, we’re serious about fun when you’re staff.
We loaded back into our ship once we were replete with sea ice thrills,
Then I shared with everyone a presentation to improve their photographic skills.
Another fine dinner left us satiated, but another adventure was in store,
So we dressed up again and enjoyed the evening exploring the views ashore.
Adélie penguins and gentoos were both there with their chicks,
Some blue-eyed shags, kelp gulls, and skuas were also along in the mix.
Up on the ridge, we could see the ship’s bridge, cast in the evening light.
To the other side, an endless sea of icebergs floating upon the night.
