Sunshine and Caspian terns greeted National Geographic Sea Bird as she and her passengers arrived in Astoria. The morning took us to Cape Disappointment State Park, a rather dismal name for a gorgeous site. Strolls along the beach, a hike through the coastal temperate rainforest, and an interactive art piece from the famed Maya Lin were among the highlights.
During the afternoon we made a pilgrimage to a colony of sea lions hauled out on the decommissioned docks of town. Shortly thereafter we paid a visit to two of Astoria’s cultural landmarks: her maritime museum and the famed Astoria Column. Others opted to walk the streets of the quaint town. No matter how you slice it, time is Astoria is always time well spent and a perfect way to start an expedition.
