After the dance party with the Spice Boys last night, we all slept in this morning. It felt strange to look out our windows and see the horizon and not just fog and ice, which was all we saw yesterday.
After breakfast, Joe gave a very interesting and educational presentation about global climate and its changes. Then Tommy began a presentation about his extensive and exciting career as a National Geographic photographer. But he was most rudely interrupted by a call from the bridge, as Brent announced that whales were ahead!
The whales put on quite a show for us. There were at least six humpback whales feeding and playing around in the waves in the shadow of the Icelandic mountains. The younger whales kept us entertained with all kinds of behaviour – slapping the surface with their fins, breeching, bubble feeding and lunging. We even saw a few whole-body jumps!
After lunch the weather continued to improve, making our sail into the fjords marvellous. The curator of The Herring Era Museum came aboard before we disembarked and gave us a short introduction to the history of the settlement and the museums in general. Following the talk, we left the ship behind and headed into the sunshine.
After a short hike we arrived at The Herring Era Museum. There were a group of local actors who performed a show in Icelandic for us. They depicted the herring boom in the early 1900’s and performed with real dead fish!
After the show we visited the museum, which was very interesting. We then had a few hours of free time.
The evening went as usual, with briefing and Recap followed by dinner. We then watched a movie about three Norwegian brothers who took a trip to the Norwegian island of Bjørnøya.
