We strapped down electronics and held onto our boots in anticipation of our day at sea. We were all relieved, however, to find smooth sailing toward South Georgia! Naturalist Carl Erik gave a presentation on his up close and personal accounts eradicating the thousands of introduced reindeer living on South Georgia.

Unfortunately, the favorable conditions didn’t last very long after our biosecurity decontamination. By the late afternoon, National Geographic Explorer was shimmying up and down on the ocean. But we carried on with natural history presentations, including a talk on the history of whaling in the region and a presentation on Antarctic krill, the keystone species here. We all knew our destination was well worth the waves.
