Welcome aboard National Geographic Orion! Over the next twenty days we are going to explore some of the world’s most remote and undoubtedly humbling destinations: The Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the Antarctic Peninsula – all of them unique locations in their own right and all of them with the candor to leave lasting impressions on every one of us.

To get to such distant and distinctive places takes time and today we have been sailing over remarkably smooth seas as we make progress towards our first destination of the Falkland Islands. Our orange parkas are out and on as we walk around the elegant decks of National Geographic Orion taking in the fresh air and the plethora of seabirds soaring effortlessly at eye level. Our rubber boots have been tried for size and placed longingly by our cabin doors in anticipation for our first landing tomorrow. Our waterproof pants have been searched out from the deepest depths of our suitcases and are primed and ready for the first drops of rain, sleet, hail or snow – whichever the unique destinations we are going to visit decide to throw at us. We are ready for this voyage and we are ready to enjoy all the adventure and exceptional opportunities that come with it.

The voyage in itself is of course something to enjoy and there is no doubt that on board National Geographic Orion we have plenty of opportunity to delight in fabulous days at sea. First and foremost, the ocean is being kind to us and delivering just a steady and mellow swell – perfect for us to begin gaining some sea legs, but not too much to have us deliberating the famous Afternoon Tea on board.

With the meals on board National Geographic Orion already astounding us, there is certainly no concern about how this wonderful expedition ship is going to keep us well fueled as we explore the wilds of the Southern Ocean. Between meals there is plenty of opportunity to indulge in the comforts of the ship: whether you choose to enjoy a quiet moment in the Observation Lounge reading a book or studying the maps, or to join the Captain and Officers on the Bridge as they navigate towards the Falkland Islands, or perhaps even to hit the gym and enjoy the scenic sea views, there is certainly no shortage of opportunities to make a day at sea aboard National Geographic Orion a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable experience.
