We spent the night in the quiet area of Atun Poza, and early in the morning we headed out to our pre-breakfast adventure. Atun Poza is both a tributary river and a community located near the main Ucayali River. There are a series of “lagoon-like” areas within the tributary, with a great concentration of wildlife. New species of birds were added to our master list, but leave it to the monkeys to steal the show! We were fortunate to see at least three different species of monkeys this morning, and although we have seen them already in previous outings, it was no less exciting to see them again.
Towards the mid-exploration outing, all three skiffs stopped in a beautiful location overseeing the river and its healthy forest, and then the real treat of the morning started. Our galley and hotel department crew put together a special “outdoor” breakfast, and we all enjoyed the same level of service that we have normally on board, but this time immersed in the Amazon forest!
For the afternoon we visited the Pacaya River. This section of the Ucayali is famous for its glassy black water, which is also known as “the mirrored jungle”. As we explored this long tributary, sightings of howler monkeys were observed along the way, as well as many shorebirds flying alongside the skiffs.
At the end of the ride, we encountered a lagoon known as “yanayacu” which translates as black-water lagoon. It turned out to be a great place to get on out bathing suits and enjoy a very refreshing afternoon. As usual, the day turned out to be a whole new experience, which was topped by the on-fired sunset as a great finale!
