After the fantastic sighting of a cow-calf pair yesterday at Lopez Mateo, we were all eager to experience what the southernmost region of Magdalena Bay had to offer us today. Bahia Almejas is known for large concentrations of mature whales that congregate in the warm waters here to breed during the winter months. So after an early morning breakfast we loaded up in pangas, which are small Mexican fishing boats, and motored south to explore the shallow waters.
Although it’s still early in the season, we saw around 30 to 40 whales today, breaching, spy hopping, and rolling at the surface. After lunch we cruised out to the entrance of Magdalena Bay and spent the rest of the afternoon in a humpback whale soup.
To cap it all off we all stood on the bow, enjoying cocktail hour and watching the sunset on our final day of the voyage. From all of us here at Lindblad Expeditions, we’ve had an amazing trip and can’t wait to sail with you again.
