We start our expedition here in Baja California on a gorgeous day with calm seas. Our first adventure is in Bahía Almejas. We embark on local pangas, or fiberglass long boats, driven by local fishermen. They know these waters well, and we spend our morning looking for grey whales and encounter the first whales of the season! These grey whales come here to give birth and mate after a 12,000-mile-long journey from the Arctic.

In the afternoon, we land via Zodiacs on a beautiful beach amongst sand dunes. We march through the dunes and along the vegetation. Animal footprints show that life is abundant in this harsh environment. We encounter shell middens, evidence of the Indigenous people who once lived here hundreds of years ago. We reach the other side of the dunes to discover the Pacific Ocean and a beach with hundreds of sand dollars. With the light just right, we stroll along the beach and take photos. What an incredible first day of our journey along the coast of Baja California Sur, Mexico.
