There’s nothing better then, when truly exploring in the expedition style, you find a place so fantastic you decide to stay there all day. That’s how it was this first day of our journey—after anchoring at Bahia San Gabriel on Isla Espiritu Santo this morning things went so well we didn’t leave!

Starting off the day strong, we sailed away from our La Paz dock to the brimming light of a new day, leaving the city behind in exchange for a week of beaches and wildlife. The sun welcomed us to Baja California with a beautiful sunrise as we grabbed breakfast and heard some more about the ship and its operations, all gearing us for the full-steam-ahead day in store. Dropping anchor in the clear waters of the bay, preparations were made for snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking along this beautiful sweep of beach. Bordered by mangroves and harboring one of the few coral reefs in Baja, San Gabriel gave us refuge for the day as we explored all it had to offer. One could take a stroll down the immaculate white beach, watch as frigatebirds hovered motionless in the sky, wade out to the sandbar to cool your feet, or even just sit and enjoy the sun. If you found yourself getting a bit warm, the sergeant majors, king angelfish, and green moray eels were just as welcoming under the waves as the clear blue sky was above them.

To finish the day we took some time out to watch the sunset, gathering on the boats for one last cruise around the bay. Watching the final rays cast a warm hue over the scene was a peaceful ending to a busy day, one that allowed us to truly see the beauty that surrounds this place and gave a newly found—or perhaps just renewed—respect for what it means to be in the wilderness of Baja.
