Today we started our final day with a great sunrise in a great location, the Panama Canal. Barro Colorado Island (or BCI) is the biggest island and was created when the area was flooded to make the canal in 1910. It has been run under the Smithsonian since 1923, making it one of the most researched tropical rainforests in the world.

Right after breakfast, we spent the morning exploring some of the trails of the island, learning of their research, and exploring the waters of the canal in pangas looking for wildlife.

We returned to National Geographic Quest for lunch and for our grand finale, we crossed the Gatun Locks, the last part of our transit of the Panama Canal! We enjoyed great weather and a beautiful show of one of the marvels of the modern era.
