This morning dawned at a balmy 67° F – the warmest weather of the trip! The National Geographic Sea Bird pulled into the calm waters of Behm Canal along the southernmost portion of Alaska’s Inside Passage, and after two photography presentations we spent the day exploring Bailey Bay.

Clear blue skies and pristine waters beckoned us to get out on foot, by kayak and aboard expedition landing craft. Those who wanted to walk took a long hike led to a beautiful waterfall and mountain lake overlooking the bay. It was a great chance to stretch our legs before our day at sea tomorrow. Those of us on the water enjoyed navigating rocky coves lined with yellow cedar and searched for two bald eagles, a harbor seal, and one rather startled black bear that was munching on grasses near the shore.

As the pictures show, this was an unusually hot and bright summer day for Alaska. We had the opportunity to break out shorts and tee shirts that had been lying dormant! Hopefully the great weather holds for our upcoming Polar Plunge…
