Today was our first full day in the Amazon Rainforest and we started our adventure downriver. The low water season is at its peak and the riverbanks are exposed, hundreds of different species are coming to the shore, and many birds fly above us. Among them, we saw flycatchers, mockingbirds, hawks, king fishers, and herons. Just after we began exploring, we encountered a sloth that was on the move for breakfast in the tall canopy. We also spotted oropendolas webbing their nests. Before returning to our ship, we had the chance to walk in the forest to find the smallest monkey in the world, the pygmy marmoset. This little creature kept on showing up around a group of tall, sappy trees.
In the afternoon, we arrived at El Dorado, a place where we had the chance to explore an area full of monkeys. At night, on the way back to Delfin II in the middle of hundreds of bats and under an amazingly clear night sky, we found tons of caymans hiding in the shallow waters at the shore. It was a spectacular first day in the Upper Amazon.
