Today we spent the entire day in the Boca de Soledad. We awakened aboard National Geographic Sea Bird to 61 degrees Fahrenheit, blue skies with high patchy clouds, and a light breeze. It was perfect weather to climb into our inflatable boats and get a closer look at the gray whales. And boy did we get closer looks!
The boats sped along the water and there were blows in all directions, near and far. The sounds of PFFFTT… pfftttt of mother and baby whales became background music to our ears, followed by the oohh! ahhhh! of the watching humans. We came across several pairs close up and got a sense of just how big the whales are. The calves, only weeks old, had a more bouncy vibrant energy than their moms… that certain curious bumbling baby quality seemingly common to babies of all species. How to describe when one of the pairs approached the boat to our splashing outstretched hands? Or the sheer joy of being showered by a whale blow? Or the grace and elegance of their magnificent bodies rolling around us and each other? Or how even the most stoic elders can revert to cute baby-talk when in the presence of these creatures?
When not whale watching we also spent time walking the dunes, relaxing on board, and enjoying the music of local musicians Los Coyotes at our cocktail fiesta and after yummy buffet dinner. What an incredible day!
