The National Geographic Sea Lion was greeted by warm sunshine and an absolutely beautiful morning as we woke in the Gulf of Panama. It was a fantastic way to start the day, and prepare for the morning activities at Bona Island.
After breakfast, with binoculars, and cameras in hand, we loaded onto motorized expedition landing crafts, and cruised along the shorelines of Bona Island. Here we discovered many species of birdlife, including brown and blue-footed boobies, brown pelicans, frigatebirds and Neotropical cormorants just to name a few. As we slowly cruised along, we also spotted iguanas, and several types of crabs scrambling up and down the rock walls.
By late afternoon, we were able to watch an educational video, which presented the history and construction of the Panama Canal. One of our naturalists described what life would be like to live in Panama City, as we waited for word to approach and make our way for the entrance to the Panama Canal.
The Panama Canal is major highlight, connecting Panama City in the Pacific to Colon in Caribbean, and is a considered to be an engineering masterpiece. It will be a great evening, as we make our way through the Panama Canal.
