Today we went ashore in Borgarfjörður Eystri to explore the northeast region of Iceland. This charming fishing village has diverse guesthouses, a campsite, and a hotel situated in beautiful surroundings. This region is among one of the finest hiking destinations in Iceland, characterized by its stunningly vibrant houses, interesting rock formations, and rare stones.

We explored this region by setting out on different activities including hiking up the Svartfell Summit (strenuous hike), hiking up to Borgarfjörður Vista (moderate hike), or hiking leisurely along the Breiðavík Trail. The start of the hike provided a great view over Álfaborg, or the City of the Elves, where the queen of the elves lives.

Other options were to explore the valley by an EMTB or setting out on your own towards the puffin colony! After enjoying the beauty of these romantic birds and the cliffs in which they burrow, we could enjoy a cozy moment in the Hafnarhusid Café before heading back to National Geographic Explorer.

After we enjoyed recap and dinner, Andreas gave a presentation about Icelandic foods and customs, showcasing Iceland’s interesting food culture.
