We started the morning at the Nimrod Hut, after walking out from the edge of the fast ice. An exploration of the hut and its contents, from Mawson’s darkroom to Shackleton’s signature, was also a chance to get out of the ferocious wind. The walk back to the ship was a lively example of Antarctic changeability, as the snow sprang up and receded within a short period of time. In the afternoon we huddled inside while the weather grew frisky, and historian Karin Murray-Bergquist gave a lecture on the Terra Nova Expedition. It was a good day to look out the windows and think of what a winter march to Cape Crozier would be like!
