The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on January 25, 2017.

After motoring 111 miles through the night, we awoke to a string of beautiful keys and to what many travel magazines call, the most beautiful beaches in the world.  Cayo Largo (Long Cay) is the exact opposite of La Isla de Juventud (The Island of Youth), which is where we came from yesterday.  While “La Isla” has few beaches, a “special municipality” of 80,000 Cubans, a national baseball team, and is essentially devoid of tourists, the only reason people exist on Cayo Largo is for tourism.  No one actually lives here.

The fact that Cayo Largo always had such potential for tourism coupled with it being a center for biodiversity, forced that government into a hard decision.  However, in an effort to resolve the economic crisis of the 1990s the state decided to develop three hotels and an international airport, and soon the island became known as the best beach getaway in all of Cuba.

Panorama II dropped anchor several miles offshore, and we were taken to the island in two rounds by a local boat.  At the marina, we met with Gonzolo Nodarse, a marine biologist with The Cayo Largo Turtle Rescue Center.  He provided tours of the incubation grounds and breeding pools.  Since all of the island’s sandy beaches, which are the nesting zones for the two species of turtles on the island, are adjacent to hotels this center has been necessary for the turtle’s survival.  Beaches are inspected daily, and eggs are immediately transferred to the center, where the hatchery yields a 79% success rate (as compared to 90% in the natural environment).

One group embarked on a boat for some off-shore snorkeling, where they saw 5-foot tarpon, lion fish, and green moray eels. I took the time to explore the gorgeous white-sand beaches of Playa Sirena and Playa Paraiso.  We met on Panorama II for lunch, and Doug Rader gave a talk on “The Coral Ecosystems of Cuba.”  We proceeded to the rear deck for tastings of 11-year old Santiago rum (in my opinion, the best brand of rum in Cuba), and a stunning sunset. All in all, another great day in Cuba.
