The morning of our second day brought us up the Chatham Strait, the shifting winds picked up through the night reminding us how fickle the weather in South East Alaska can be. We picked up whale researcher Dr. Andy Szabo for a talk on his whale research and visited Kasny Ku Falls in the morning as we sailed to Hanus Bay.
An afternoon of hiking took us through an ecologically rich forest to Lake Eva. Exploring a small salmon river that flows from Lake Eva into the harbor on kayaks was a peaceful way to enjoy the estuary area, home to the keystone salmon fish, and offering views of bald eagles, harbor seals and residents of the expansive intertidal area.
