Today, we spent the morning cruising for wildlife in Chatham Strait, and find it we did!
We spied blows in the distance. Upon closer inspection, we found ourselves with ten to twelve humpback whales blowing, fluking, and feeding right next to shore. A bit later, we stumbled upon a group of three humpbacks cooperatively bubble net feeding. Our staff deployed the hydrophone, and we heard the trumpeting of the bubble net caller- the orchestrator of this feeding technique. It was an amazing thing to witness! The weather was warm and beautiful as we gazed over a glassy sea.
After lunch, we made our way to Hanus Bay. We split into two groups and half set off on hikes to Lake Eva. This is a gorgeous, maintained trail next to a lagoon filled with salmon. Some of our group that hiked to Lake Eva jumped in for a swim in the afternoon sun. The other half kayaked deep into the tidal lagoon. We spied on sockeye and chum salmon that were heading upriver to spawn, and we enjoyed checking out life in this brackish lagoon. It was a truly lovely day on National Geographic Venture.
