The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on January 18, 2017.

Our last full day of adventures in Cienfuegos and it has been a very full day! We started at the Benny Moré School of Art in Cienfuegos. We then visited a private market where everything from fresh beef to vegetables and fruits was on offer. For lunch we stopped at the restaurant “Casa Prado,” with some of us choosing the local favorite Cuban dish “Ropa Vieja.”

Our afternoon visit was to the Soledad sugar plantation outside Cienfuegos in Pepito Tey, originally owned by American Edward Atkins. We then returned to Cienfuegos for a remarkable children’s musical performance of “Cucarachita Martina” by the local theatre company called Abrakadabra at the seaside pavilion venue “Club Social Antonio Mella.”

To finish our day we watched the sunset from the rooftop of the Palacio del Valle, while drinking mojitos and enjoying live music. Truly a day full of people-to-people interactions in this most culturally diverse country!
