The DER below is from the expedition to Cuba that began on February 22, 2017.

Our final day in Cuba was spent enjoying the Cienfuegos area. We began in the square enjoying the beautiful architecture and learning the history of this city of 170,000 people. From there it was a short stroll to the local farmers market, where we saw a variety of local produce on sale – pineapples, tomatoes, peppers, cassava, guava, bananas and more. The prices at the market were in the currency that the locals use – the Cuban peso. Cuba has two currencies, the convertible peso “CUCs” (that we have been spending for the last ten days) and the Cuban peso. The conversion is 1 CUC to 24 pesos, so this gave us some interesting bargaining opportunities.

In the late morning, we visited the Benny More School of Art. Students from ages 8 to 13 performed guitar, flute, clarinet and violin for us. They also did an excellent dance for us. From there we met with some of the visual arts teachers to see their students’ work and also had the chance to make purchases from the instructors themselves.

The highlight of our afternoon was a performance by the Cienfuegos Guitar Orchestra. A group of 8 professional guitarists delighted us with their amazing skill and interesting arrangements. We have lost track of the number of musical performances we have seen this trip. But the impression that the majority of Cubans are musicians keeps getting reinforced. This is not true, of course, but it is impressive to see the emphasis that is placed on education in the arts.

We ended our day with cocktails and a beautiful sunset on the roof of La Union Hotel before heading back to Panorama II for another delicious meal and a fun slideshow to celebrate all we have done this week.
