A grand spectrum of ice and its associated creatures was on display today. From our morning on the water, winding through the otherworldly shapes of ice in Cierva Cove, to an afternoon in Mikkelsen Harbor, where gentoo penguins nested, squabbled, and take leave from the ice and sea just long enough to bring the next generation into this world. By day’s end our captain had found us a snug berth of sea ice to bow into for the night. With the bruised tones of sunset reflecting off every icy surface, we went to bed in Wilhelmina Bay, anxious for the prospect of what lay at our feet tomorrow.
