A busy expedition day started in the morning with a visit to Cuverville Island, a sheltered spot at the head of the Errera Channel with a gentoo penguin colony and outstanding views. Then a change in plans took us northward through the afternoon to an evening landing at Baily Head, site of the largest chinstrap penguin colony in the South Shetland Islands. We wrapped up the day with a short cruise through Neptune’s Bellows and into Whaler’s Bay inside the flooded Deception Island caldera, for a view of the ruins of the old whaling station and abandoned British Base.
