As we made our way towards Deception Island, naturalist Conor woke us up to news about fin whales just ahead of the ship. A group of these animals, the second largest cetacean on the planet, kept us company before breakfast.
This made arriving in the caldera of Deception Island even more special. We learned about the grim history of the buildings in the bay. The old whaling station is still present, and we strolled around and absorbed the past. We observed the fuming beaches, where warm sand made us aware that there is still volcanic activity on the island.
Although the day was overcast with a slight gusty wind, guests took on both kayaking and hiking with excitement. Just before lunch, 55 guests chose to bravely throw themselves into the icy cold water for a polar plunge. They were rewarded with cheers and hot chocolate.
We are now making our way towards the Weddell Sea. As we head for the Antarctic Sound, what could be more appropriate than listening to guest speaker Mensun Bound, who found the wreck of Shackleton’s Endurance?
