After departing Sitka last evening, National Geographic Sea Bird found a quiet anchorage for the night. Today began with a minke whale sighting and ended with a view of humpback whales feeding in Chatham Strait.

Scattered throughout the day were several other wildlife sightings—deer, birds, toads, slugs, seals, sea otters, a brown bear, and a mink. The scenery was spectacular, and the weather quite fair as we hiked around and kayaked in DeGroff Bay. The photo team and naturalists taught us about the temperate coastal rain forest and the nation’s largest national forest—the Tongass. We explored extensive tidal flats and a lovely meadow. The day’s avian highlight: sandhill cranes.

Back on the ship, we had a photography presentation and hands-on sessions as we cruised through scenic Peril Strait.
