After howling winds yesterday, we enjoyed a much more
relaxing day at sea today with perfect weather conditions. We departed Kalymnos
at 0500, then anchored at nearby Kos to clear through customs and exit the
European Union as we make our way into Turkey. Our excellent Greek guides
Sophia and Effie, who’ve been travelling with us for the entire voyage so far,
bid us farewell as we head towards the neighboring Asian country. Once we set
sail, we were graced with beautiful sunny skies and a light breeze that kept us
moving at a steady pace towards our afternoon destination of Didyma.
Once in Didyma, we caught a charter bus to the stunning
Temple of Apollo. It’s an amazing sight indeed, and surprising that so much has
remained through the years of severe earthquakes that frequent the region. The
massive walls and remains of columns are in great shape, and we are guided
through this magnificent sanctuary by our new Turkish guides.
In the evening, we are reminded that sailing is not always
such a smooth and enjoyable ride after watching the amazing documentary film
entitled “Around Cape Horn” which leaves us in appreciation that we’ve had such
great weather thus far. After a delicious Turkish barbeque, the Sea Cloud crew dress up as the Shanty
Gang and sing us tunes, and those of us brave enough to sing along join in the
festivities. It’s been yet another fabulous day at sea, and we’re all looking
forward to the sights Turkey has to offer in the next few days!
