After sadly taking our leave of Antarctica last night, National Geographic Explorer moved into the infamous Drake Passage, heading north for South America. This morning found us in very calm conditions with a gentle swell, much to the relief of guests and crew.
Unfortunately, light winds are not as popular with the bird life, as the big albatrosses need the wind to help keep them aloft. However, one or two black-browed and wandering albatrosses have been seen. From about 9.00 a.m. the sea temperature has been rising steadily as we cross from cold, Antarctic waters into the relatively warmer southern Atlantic Ocean.
The day has been spent listening to fascinating lectures about feathers, climate change, geography, and Antarctic explorers, as well as preparing for our arrival in Ushuaia tomorrow afternoon.
