Naturalist Kristian began the presentations for our second day sailing the Drake Passage with, “The Ocean’s Food Chain: Nature's Way of Doing Things.” With perfect timing, a humpback whale breached astern of the ship during his passage on the “whale pump”. This was followed by Captain Martin’s engrossing talk about the amazing ships, National Geographic Resolution and National Geographic Endurance, during which the first tabular iceberg was observed. Today was also an amazing birding day, with more than ten seabird species observed.
The presentations continued in the afternoon, with National Geographic Expert Tommy Heinrich about his photographic career. An interlude was offered with a rich wine and cheese tasting teatime. Then Naturalist Caroline talked about the geology of the Antarctic Peninsula before the recap.
Our marathon of information ended after dinner with Torre’s lecture on her research work on emperor penguins. It was a full and educational day at sea.
