Our day aboard National Geographic Orion began with a journey to Taha’a, where we stepped ashore to visit a local vanilla plantation. Surrounded by the sweet aroma of curing vanilla pods, we gained insight into the intricate process of cultivation and its deep cultural significance.
From there, we made our way to a private motu, a pristine island oasis, ours to explore both above and below the water. Snorkelers marveled at the vibrant marine life while others basked on the white sandy shores. A delicious beachside barbecue prepared by the hospitality team made for a truly memorable midday feast.
In the afternoon, we visited the sacred Marae Taputapuātea on Ra’iatea, an important spiritual and navigational center for Polynesians across the Pacific. As we stood among the ancient stones, we learned of the site’s influence on Polynesian voyaging and traditions.
With the sun setting, we departed for Makatea, reflecting on a day rich with history, culture, and natural beauty.
