National Geographic Endurance arrived in Faial this morning under clear blue skies, always a gift when the islands are shining like they were as we pulled into the harbor. The green volcanic slopes and pastel-colored buildings of Horta welcomed us warmly.
After breakfast, guests disembarked for a variety of excursions. Some set off on invigorating hikes along the island’s ridgelines, rewarded with panoramic views of the ocean and neighboring Pico Island. Others explored Horta’s charming town center, visited the Whaling Museum, or stopped at Peter’s Café Sport — a legendary meeting spot for sailors and adventurers. The scrimshaw collection above the café sparked curiosity, offering a tangible link to Faial’s whaling past.
In the afternoon, more hikes departed from scenic viewpoints, winding through laurel forests and volcanic terrain. The perfect weather held throughout the day, with sun-dappled trails and cool Atlantic breezes making the walks especially pleasant.
By late afternoon, everyone had returned to National Geographic Endurance, glowing from fresh air, good walking, and the spirit of exploration. Evening recap buzzed with shared stories and sightings before we gathered for dinner and watched the lights of Horta twinkle in the distance.
