Monday has a bad reputation. Nobody is ever excited for Monday, it’s slow and sleepy and unwanted; but here in Antarctica and aboard the National Geographic Explorer Monday means something entirely different. On this particular Monday, the crew and staff were in search of a special treat—fast ice.
Attached fast to land, fast ice allows the ship’s guests to go for a stroll on the frozen ocean. Late in the season as we are, it is often difficult to find, but after a morning of cruising in search of such luck, the staff and crew found a fantastic piece and parked perfectly in the ice itself. Guests disembarked and walked in awe as they took in the landscape surrounding them. Very galactic, the flat, barren, frozen seascape is often compared to Mars by both newcomers and seasoned naturalists alike.
The afternoon led the ship to the nearby Fish Islands. Here many guests enjoyed kayaking on perfectly serene, calm waters. With no wind and no swell, the flawless weather allowed those who had never kayaked before to test out the sport in one of the most remarkable destinations on the planet—Antarctica! While kayakers navigated the loose pack ice, Zodiac cruisers perused nearby wildlife with informed naturalists as their guides.
At the end of the day the National Geographic Explorer continued north towards her next destination—the Lemaire Channel.
