Being in the Galápagos Islands is a dream. Every outing is full of surprises. Early in the morning we went for a peaceful walk on Punta Cormorant. Our early effort paid off. The brackish lagoon was housing flamingos, stilts, whimbrels, and other waders. In addition, the path led us to an organic beach where we found hundreds of ghost crabs looking for organic material in the sand while frigate birds were soaring over the green Pacific sea turtle nests.
Late in the morning the underwater realm was pleasant and interesting with the variety of fish found for our guests in the drifting snorkeling. The interaction of the marine currents with the small island brings a diverse school of pelagic fish such as jacks and tuna that astonished us. But the most outstanding performance was given by immature sea lions that swam between our explorers.
A remarkable day continued astonishing us when a pod of tropical whales and bottlenose dolphins showed up by the starboard of the ship in our way to our next destination. The afternoon outing took place at the oldest working mail system of Ecuador, “Post Office Bay.” Stories and anecdotes were shared in this mysterious place that once was a meeting point for whalers and buccaneers in the 17th century. After we collected a few postcards and letters for hand delivery we took the Zodiacs for a ride along the coastline of Floreana Island. Penguins, blue-footed boobies, pelicans, sea turtles, rays, and sharks make the end of the day magical.
Today Mother Nature was appreciated from different perspectives and our mystical day on the most mysterious island of the Galápagos ended with an astonishing sunset.
