This is Floreana Island located in the south of the Galápagos. It has a small human population of around 120 to 150 people. Its geology and its wildlife are very interesting. It is dotted with volcanoes of different sizes from the shore to the highlands. It is green and fertile here and the community partakes in farming and cattle ranching.
In the morning we landed at Punta Cormorant on the north side of Floreana. As soon as we landed we started to explore the forest. Here at Punta Cormorant there is a brackish lagoon surrounded with saltbushes and mangroves. This place is the right habitat for different types of herons, migrant birds and flamingos.
As soon as we came back we weighed anchor and moved to Champion Islet. We explored this island for about an hour from Zodiacs. During the Zodiac exploration we spotted different species of sea birds perching on cliffs and flying and fishing along the shore. Some of the bird species we witnessed were Blue footed boobies, Nazca boobies, Brown pelicans, Tropical birds and many others.
This place is also a beautiful snorkeling site with a stunning number of tropical fish with so many varieties to discover.
Later in the afternoon we landed at the legendary Post Office Bay. This post office barrel, at one point in time, was the most important mechanism of communication on this side of the Pacific Ocean. The users of this system were English whalers. Today we took part in this old tradition and also became a part of history.
