Today we awoke to impressive views of the skyline of the modern city of Fortaleza, the capital of the northeastern Brazilian state of Ceará and home of over two-and-a-half million inhabitants. The area has beautiful beaches, turquoise waters, coconut palms, and sand dunes. It is one of Brazil’s most popular tourism destinations and one of the world’s main producers of cashews.

This afternoon, we enjoyed a tour of this cosmopolitan city and sunset from the top of Fortaleza’s sand dunes. From 80 feet high, we had spectacular views as we looked down at the city’s skyline along the beautiful coastline.

Fortaleza is the perfect place for National Geographic Explorer to overnight.
