Early morning found us doing a short Zodiac exploration of Krossfjorden with a magnificent tidewater glacier at the end of the fjord. Along with the glacier and ice we had an excellent view of a bearded seal hauled out on the ice. After some time in the Zodiacs we went ashore to view some of the interesting botany at a place we call the "Hanging Gardens." Along with the plants most of us saw an Arctic fox, and a few encountered some reindeer. Following a late breakfast it was time for a visit to the northernmost town in the world, Ny-Alesund.

In the afternoon some us went ashore at Lilliehookfjorden while others ventured forth on a new activity to the Caledonian Star - sea kayaking. These kayaks are extremely stable and allow even novice paddlers a chance for a unique way to experience the Arctic, at 79§ 15' N. We kayaked along the shoreline and were amazed at the sounds of the little auk bird colony on the cliff faces, and also nature's art in the form of icebergs. This addition to the Caledonian Star was very well received by all, and the lounge was abuzz with chatter after the kayakers returned. Kayaks will prove to be a great addition to expedition travel.
