Nauta Caño, Piraña Caño & San Francisco Community
We had a glorious morning today. It was a little overcast but rather than being an adverse condition it was great for our planned activities, kayaking and skiff riding. The birds were awake and active and were seen flying or hanging around the edges of Nauta Caño, hawks, egrets, kingfishers, jacanas, jacamars, flycatchers, caracaras, ibises, umbrella birds, caciques, orioles, woodpeckers, etc. A troop of squirrel monkeys was seen foraging along the river, and parrots and parakeets were out and about as well. It is amazing to realize how much we can see in a very short period of time and space with patience and the aid of the superb trained eyes and knowledge of our talented team of Delfin II naturalists.
Later that morning, after breakfast, we went out again in skiffs to deeply explore Nauta Caño. We had once again wonderful sightings. Brown three-toed Sloths, Squirrel monkeys, and many more animal species like colorful green iguanas!
This afternoon we had a very short misty rain that accompanied us momentarily while on the exploration by skiff of Piraña Caño, where we had several more sightings of Squirrel monkeys, Black collared hawks, beautiful orchids, and several Neotropical bird species.
We ended the afternoon in San Francisco village where we went to admire the local handicrafts. Colors and textures were a delight to our eyes. After helping the local economy and consequently the conservation of the Reserve by acquiring some of the art of this community we headed back to the ship by sunset, ready for a wonderful dinner after a busy but productive day.
But the fun was not over yet. As the levels of the river waters are little by little going down we still had a pleasant surprise, a night walk in the rain forest. This walk allowed us to enjoy the darkness while covered by the magical sounds of the night dwelling creatures.
We came back onboard once again a little tired but with our hearts and minds fulfilled with that wonderful sensation of adventure.
