Nauta Caño & San Francisco

At 630 a.m. we were ready and eager to explore Nauta Caño with the help of our skiff fleet or kayaks. It was a very successful pre-breakfast outing for we spotted a very large number of bird species that included several highlights like: Dusky-headed parakeets, Oriole Blackbirds, Kingfishers, Black capped Donacobious, a Trogon, a Yellow headed Caracara, and rarely seen in daytime the nocturnal bird the Great Potoo.

We returned to the ship around 8:00 and after breakfast we went back to the river but this time to go deeper into it. Most guests went to swim in a beautiful large lagoon. The temperature of the water was perfect and served to cool down our bodies from the already beautiful hot day we had.

In the afternoon, we went for a long and strenuous hike on a rain forest trail in the vicinity of San Francisco community. This year, just like last year, we have had one of the highest water levels ever historically recorded in the Reserve in the last decades. As the levels of the rivers are rapidly going down with the arrival of the hot season the trail in San Francisco, in the area of the Marañon River, is all over dry land now. An adventurous group of guests chose this option that leaded them to a long, muddy, and sweaty adventure. Those guests who did not go walking went to a peaceful black water stream where they had a long and rewarding skiff ride. They spotted not only many bird species but enjoyed the beautiful and paradisiacal rain forest scenery of this remote location.

Later in the afternoon, we all went to San Francisco community where we spent some time admiring and/or buying the local handicrafts.

Dinner was next followed by lively tropical and folkloric music played in the dining room by some talented Delfin II crew members. Tomorrow our expedition in the Upper Amazon continues. I can hardly wait to see what new exciting sightings and adventures are waiting for us.
