Supay Caño & Flor de Castaña

Our expedition in and around the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve in the Peruvian Upper Amazon is unfortunately coming to an end. On our last full day we started early in the morning to enjoy the different activities planned for the day. On board our skiffs we departed at 6:30 a.m. with the hope to search for wildlife in Supay Caño. We had three groups, one went kayaking along the banks of the peaceful stream of water at their own rhythm and two joined a skiff ride. Any given morning is good for the abundance of the biodiversity of the reserve to become evident, and today we constantly marveled at bird sightings.

Later on in the morning and after a delightful breakfast we went back to Supay Caño again but this time we traveled as deep into the river as we could. A large list of wildlife sightings was compiled. Toucans, sloths, several monkey troops, and many bird species like flycatchers, anis, and parrots were seen and admired.

The afternoon found us in the vicinities of Flor de Castaña Town. We visited this community that has the most relaxed atmosphere that facilitated a great cultural interaction with its inhabitants. Many curious children and kids were following us everywhere we went. At the end of the visit we l gathered at the local school where we interchanged songs and smiles.

Later in the evening we watched a slideshow of the pictures of this week´s expedition. A wonderful barbeque farewell dinner buffet was next seasoned with the music performed live by some members of our talented crew. What else can I say? Words cannot do justice for all the thoughts, memories, and well being that this spectacular Upper Amazon region of Peru can evoke in our hearts and souls. You may be leaving the Amazon but the Amazon will never leave you. Hasta la vista amigas y amigos!
