El Fin Del Mundo
When we went to sleep, we jokingly wondered what the world would be like when we woke up. With all the predictions of the end of the world, what would today bring? Well, we woke to sunny skies, nice temperatures, and parakeets and macaws flying over head. Not that different from yesterday and a great way to begin another spectacular day here in the Amazon.
For the morning, we explored the flooded forest and lakes of Atun Poza. Water was flooding in from the main river which allowed us to reach some previously inaccessible spots. Great views were had of monkeys, sloths, flowers, and birds. Eventually we made our way to a hyacinth covered lake for a delicious breakfast served by our guides. What a way to spend the morning.
In the afternoon we headed up the Pacaya River ending at Yanayacu Lake. Many more monkeys were spotted on the way including squirrel, monk saki, and howlers. At the lake, we joined the pink dolphins in the water for a swim in the perfect temperature waters. Cold beer in hand, parrots flying overhead, and dolphins swimming by, wow, what a spot. A distant rainbow formed over the lake, maybe a hint of what was yet to come?
After our visit to Yanayacu Lake, we began to make our way back to the Delfin II. We were sidetracked by a few groups of howler monkeys, as well as squirrel and brown capuchin monkeys. As we continued on, a colorful hue began to develop near the setting sun, and a very strange sunset developed. Technicolor bands filled the sky in one direction while a big black cloud filled the other. Maybe this was the end? It did begin to rain, but we successfully made it back to our home the Delfin II. We then began to retrace our path back downriver on the Ucayali towards tomorrow's destination. IF there is a tomorrow, I am sure it will be grand.
