Isabela & Fernandina Islands

There are very few places that could be compared with the islands that we just visited today. Isabela Island is by far the largest of the archipelago with nearly half of the land mass of the Galápagos territory. It is also considered to be one of the youngest islands in the Galápagos due its location, the western rim, or better known as the rim of fire! Our morning was split between observing different species of marine mammals from the ship to close encounters with bizarre looking species such as the Mola mola or ocean sun fish.

It was also during the morning that the calm waters of Punta Vicente Roca allowed us to kayak its surrounding hills, while some of us enjoyed the spectacular view of the imposing volcanoes while Zodiac riding. The clear waters of the bay justified another opportunity for snorkeling, so we headed to our encounter with penguins, flightless cormorants and sea turtles.

The island of Fernandina was our goal for the afternoon program and it gave us its best! It was here where tons of marine iguanas were found basking on the rocks, while sea lions observed us patiently as we walked by. By the end of the day we had accomplished everything that we planned to do when the day started and even more. These two islands are already part of the large group of happy memories that we have been collecting during this week. They will be hard to forget, but hey…who wants to forget happy memories anyway? So let’s enjoy a drink and celebrate another beautiful day in this lost paradise of the Pacific!
