Hood Island

It is always very fulfilling for every one of us Naturalists to see how lucky our guests are to visit such an amazing island, Española. This little paradise, as we like to call it, is located at the south-eastern most area on the archipelago.

There was nothing that we did not offer for this day, so I believe everyone ended up having their share of activities. Our water activities were very popular, and a lot guests chose from sea kayaking, swimming or snorkeling, but the idea of just laying on the whitest beach that we have ever seen was very appealing, as well. Did I mention that the last option had to be shared with sea lions? Well, we did!

For our afternoon we headed to a location known as Punta Suarez, at the western corner of the same Española Island. It was here that we spent a lot of time at the Galápagos sea lion’s nursery, where a lot of very young pups were found. Some of them turned out to be too friendly and even came so close to check on our shoes, or even staring at us, making us feel as if we were all one big nice family that was very welcome to their environment.

It is not only the fact that one can get so close to animals, but the truly amazing thing is the trust that the animals have in us. It is easy to perceive the innocence that each and every one of them, regardless of their species, reflects in their faces.

In some point of our walk we had a lot of Nazca boobies all around us, showing their courtship display abilities, oblivious to us visitors. It was fun to observe the exchange of “engagement gifts” such as little pebbles, twigs, and anything that might look attractive to them.

By the end of the day we felt really thankful for the time spent in this glorious island and for the great moments we collected throughout the week.
