Española Island

Today I thank God for allowing me to come and visit this beautiful place once more. I’ll never get bored of Española. Every morning I wake up anchored in front of this island, I wonder about the new surprises that I will encounter each time. And as soon as we land, everything is special. I have visited Espanola on at least 200 occasions, and every time feels like the first time.

One has to be aware of the kind of trail: a rocky and not very leveled terrain takes you in a loop of amazing sightings. I know this site well, and after walking along the path for a while I invited my guests to have a magic moment. What is a “Magic moment”? They replied. I responded that for such a thing we had to take a sit, keep still and silent, to just enjoy nature, something we don’t do very often. Everybody looked at me as if I had lost my mind and then I said, “Just listen”. It hadn’t passed thirty seconds yet, when everyone had been charmed by the exquisiteness of the music of Mother Nature. The wind was blowing through their hair and refreshing their faces, a transitory breeze brought us the sweetest symphony performed by a big orchestra of boobies, terns, sea lions and the power of the waves crashing against the rocks. Everybody got in a phase of revelation and discovered that there are many things around us, that speak their own ways, and that want to tell us something; but many times we walk through, and don’t see and don’t listen.

In the afternoon we met with friends from other boats. Lucho Verdesoto, Lindblad Expedition Leader, joined us with more Lindblad guests at Gardner Bay. We became an even bigger family, enjoying all together the calm and turquoise waters of Española, and the gentleness of Mother Nature.
